The first vineyard in Idaho was planted in 1863.  A reporter for the Idaho Statesman, interviewed  "Mr. Walling" who was very proud to show the "specimens of the Royal Muscadine from cuttings set a year ago last spring, that show that there is no mistake about their bearing and ripening well in this climate. There is no reason why the vine should not be extensively and successfully cultivated here as well as other fruits." Idaho Statesman, Tuesday Morning, Sept. 5, 1865.

Vineyards are being planted in Idaho at the fastest pace in our history.  Many of our vineyard owners are adding to their plantings, either more of the same varietal they have now or introducing new ones. Idaho is increasing its total acreage of vinifera plantings substantially.

The majority of Idaho's vineyards are in the southwest corner near the Snake River.  It is the combination of long growing days, moderate climate, and unique soil that makes the Snake River region of Idaho so beneficial to growing wine grapes.
